Lake Burley Griffin is the central hub of Canberra, and it dominates the landscape. There is a wide footpath around the lake.
There are many national institutions that are located on its shores. There are also events that occur on the lake from time to time.
There are many places around that lake from where you can take photos. The lake is very photogenic and the trees around it change with the seasons.
You can walk or cycle around the lake, however there is a shorter route just around the central basin that involves crossing over several bridges to do so. Most people do this.
There are public toilets near all the tourist spots, and also inside the national institution buildings.
Good places to park and explore the lake for photography include:
Commonwealth Park/ National Capital Exhibition
Queen Elizabeth Terrace
Carillion & Queen Elizabeth II Island
National Museum of Australia
Lake Park
Beijing Garden
Nara Peace Park

There are many parking places around the lake. Of course parking is more difficult in the main tourist areas of the lake on public holidays or big events.
Parking is generally free away from the busy areas near Civic.
