This is a small nature reserve that stretches between William Hovell Drive and the Molonglo River. There are plenty of native plants and wildlife. It contains typical Canberra grassland.
The trails are only grass, and sometimes they disappear in the long grass. However, the trails are well marked with posts, and these posts seem to be spaced about 50m apart. Often from one marker you can see the next. The markers have arrows showing the direction you need to go.
Watch out for the land immediately below the billabongs. The ground is always muddy. Once I was here after a period of rain my shoes disappeared in the mud. I tried it again in a dry patch and again the land was muddy.
The land drops down towards the Molonglo River and the reserve actually stops before you get there (see photo below). Once you cross the road trail at the bottom there are no trails to the river (that I have found). You have to look out for trails made by previous hikers. It took me about 30 minutes to get to the river.
When I last went there wasn't a lot of water flowing in the river because we were in a dry patch.
There are no toilets here.
The flies are pretty bad here, so make sure you've used insect repellent.
The reserve is adjacent to William Hovell Drive between Belconnen and the suburb of Whitlam.
There is a free parking area on the opposite side of the main road.
When I was there in November, the gate from the carpark was locked, so you had to squeeze through a fence before you could get to the step-through..

Watch where you tread. I'm sure looking for bombs will be fun for the kids!
Trail markers and typical trail surface
Dam. Cross uphill from this to avoid the mud.
Trail down towards the river
Lower edge of the reserve. There is a trail in front that seems to go to the suburb of Whitlam. The river is straight in front.
Heading down to the river. There are no marked trails here.
