The arboretum is full of trees from all over the world. It is a great place to go if you enjoy trees and panoramic scenes of Canberra. There are lookouts with 360-degree views that include Lake Burley Griffin, Black Mountain, the Woden valley, and the Brindabellas.
There is a main visitors centre that has a great view over the Canberra city side of the arboretum. There are often people flying kites nearby because of the air updrafts. This building has toilets, food and drinks, and a shop. The building itself is attractive and worthy of photographic attention. There is a large playground for the kids.
You can drive around most of the arboretum, but to get to some of the tree plantations you'll need to get out and walk as they block off the roads.
There are some pretty diverse environments within the arboretum that are worth visiting for their photo opportunities. These areas include:
National Bonsai & Penjing exhibition
There are also some lookouts that provide great photography opportunities:
Arboretum visitors centre
Dairy Farmers Hill lookout
As you can imagine, the arboretum changes character throughout the year. Autumn is especially nice.
The National Arboretum is off the Tuggeranong Parkway towards Black Mountain.
There is paid parking up near the main building, where there is food, souvenirs, and toilets.
There is plenty of free parking on the roads if you just want to drive around to the different areas taking photos.
