Cotter Dam is Canberra's largest dam. The new dam was built in front of the old, which is now submerged.
The dam is accessible from the end of the carpark, so you don't have to walk far. There is a footbridge that takes you over the river, and this is the best spot to take a photo of the dam itself. The footbridge also takes you to an elevated lookout.
There is an elevated lookout near the dam wall that is a 5.5km round trip with a significant climb involved. You can see details of this here - Cotter Dam Lookout.
This area is popular with families, and has parkland, BBQs, kids playground, and toilets. This would be a good place to take the family and then slip away to do some photography.
The reserve is NOT pet-friendly.
The Cotter River passes along the side of the reserve and it is a popular place for kids to splash around. There are also photographic opportunities with this river. There is a path down both sides of the river.
The carpark for the dam is off the Cotter Road, about 15 minutes from the suburb of Wright.
