Captains Flat is a small town about an hour's drive South-East from Canberra.
It seems like a strange town. When I was there in early 2026 there weren't any people around and there were a lot of empty buildings. It seems like it's deserted during the day and probably busy after work and on weekends. During the day there were no shops or cafes open.
The old mine site is being rejuvenated, and due for re-opening later in 2026. Until then all proximity to the mine site is closed off. I think the town will be a lot more popular and interesting then.
There are public toilets available next to the sports oval and kids playground.
About an hour's drive SE from Canberra.
There was little traffic on the way because its not really on the way to anywhere.
Plenty of parking when the roads are deserted.
Looking back down into the town after driving through it
Lots of evidence of mining activity in the past
Pretty typical of the road to Captains Flat
The pub in the centre of town
Old train lines from the mining era
This looks like a place that weighted the ore being removed
Old post office
Memorial (in the park) to miners who died
