There are numerous bodies of water around Canberra. Lakes are the most obvious, but there are also multiple sites adjoining rivers.
One of the road crossings over the Molonglo River. Here there are beaches along the river and picnic spots.
Another river crossing, but no family-friendly reserves or parking area. You are close to river rapids.
A spot where you can get close to the river with opportunities for river and river rapids photography.
One of the Gungahlin lakes. Less popular than Yerrabi Pond, with a few small hills. The path only extends around 75% of the lake as there is a golf course adjoining the water on the eastern side, so you briefly have to walk on suburban streets to get completely around.
One of the Gungahlin lakes. Flat paths make this an easy walk. A photographer will probably take an hour to get around. 20 minutes for normal people.
The centre of Canberra, with many Nationla institutions and landmarks on its shores.
The major lake in the Belconnen area. Adjacent to Belconnen Town Centre. You can walk around the lake in about an hour. There are multiple photography locations around the edge of the lake.
This is the dam that holds the water in Lake Burley Griffin. You can get close to the spillway when it's shooting water out. You can also get some interesting night photos here if the conditions are right. There is also a small picnic ground on the lake side of dam that provides good views of the dam and the lake.
One of Canberra's dams holding our water supply. It isn't too far away and is in a nature reserve with a good trail taking you to the dam itself. This is also a good place for a family picnic. From the reserve, you can climb the trail up to the Cotter Dam Lookout.
This is about 30 minutes outside Canberra, on the road to Sydney. It is now full of water, having been empty for the past 20 or more years. As a result, there are some interesting photos to be had as the waters' edge is very new and grazing land and fences are now partially submerged.
A very accessible recreation area by the side of Lake Burley Griffin. Play areas for the kids, an inflatable aqua park, and toilets and bbq areas. Can be busy in the mornings with rowers out on the lake for practice - there are a few rowing clubs with facilities here.
This is a small river crossing behind the equestrian centre in Yarralumla. You can't cross this after rain as it is partially submerged.
